They dangled Kyle Orton, their most experienced quarterback and former starter, on the waiver wire.

This week, more than at any other time this season, the Broncos believed that quarterback-troubled teams, particularly those with playoff aspirations, would be willing to take on Orton and the $2.604 million remaining on his 2011 salary.

Had Orton passed through waivers without a claim, the Broncos (5-5) not only would have been stuck with his $2.604 million tab, they would have lost a quality quarterback insurance policy for their stretch playoff run."
