J.R. Smith served his one-game suspension Sunday, remaining in the team hotel while the game was played, the punishment for his Flagrant Foul Two in the fourth quarter of Game 3. Without him, the Knicks saw their bench contribute just seven points.

"I found out about it late last night and of course it put a damper into a lot of our plans," Carmelo Anthony said. "We were looking forward to having him in this game today. But we didn’t. And the guys that played, they stepped up, and they put us in a position to try to win the basketball game. We missed J.R. and we look forward to having him back."

"I’m not using that as an excuse," coach Mike Woodson said. "We had enough tonight. I thought our guys competed and did what they were supposed to do, to get back in the game and give us a chance at the end to win it. But we didn’t make the plays coming down the home stretch; they did. J.R. is a big piece of what we do, but he wasn’t here tonight, so I’m not using that as an excuse."
