Everyone was aware that Wednesday marked the return of Miikka Kiprusoff.
Who knew that it would also be the return of Blake Comeau, scorer of goals?
The Calgary Flames’ hard-luck forward bagged the game-winner in a 4-1 decision over the San Jose Sharks in National Hockey League action at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Goal-less this winter, Comeau’s last tally had come way back on March 26, 2012.
But in the early stages of the third period, he took a smart feed from Chris Butler, wheeled down the right wing, and popped a perfect shot over goalie Thomas Greiss’s shoulder.
The subsequent celebration looked like a mix of happiness and relief.
“That’s a fair assessment, for sure,” said Comeau. “I feel that no one puts more pressure on themselves than I do. It was a good feeling to get on the board. Maybe I’ll be able to sleep a little bit better tonight.
“More importantly, it was nice to get the win and keep climbing the standings. So if I can contribute, that’s a good thing. And if we keep winning, that’s even better.”
