"One day after deciding on Jonathan Bernier as their backup goalie, the Kings made it official Monday, signing the 23-year-old to a two-year contract extension through 2012-13 and placing Erik Ersberg on waivers.
Bernier will earn $975,000 in 2011-12 (a raise of more than $200,000) and $1,525,000 the following season, for a salary-cap hit of $1.25 million. His entry-level contract was set to expire after this season.
The competition between Bernier and Ersberg wasn't much of one.
Erbserg, a King since 2007-08, sustained a hand injury in practice Sept. 19 and never appeared in a preseason game. Bernier, meanwhile, appeared in three games and posted a team-best 1.86 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.
Bernier was named the American Hockey League Goaltender of the Year last season after going 30-21-6 with a 2.03 goals-against average, .936 save percentage and nine shutouts for the Manchester Monarchs. He also appeared in three regular-season games with the Kings and won all three, including one by shutout.
The Kings also placed forward Rich Clune on waivers. The 23-year-old agitator made his NHL debut with the Kings last season, posting 26 penalty minutes and two assists in 14 games. After impressing the club with his fitness numbers in training camp, Clune went scoreless with seven penalty minutes in three preseason games. "
