King him: L.A. trades for Dustin Penner

"The usual insanity that is the NHL trade deadline took a chill pill this year. At least, many of the league's general managers chose to spread out their acquisitions over the span of weeks, not just the hours leading up to noon Monday.

Not Dean Lombardi. In what turned out to be a shallow pool of available talent, the Kings' general manager reeled in the biggest fish.

Edmonton Oilers left wing Dustin Penner was brought back to Southern California for prospect Colten Teubert, a first-round 2011 draft pick, and a conditional third-round pick in 2012. That pick becomes a second-rounder if the Kings win the Stanley Cup this season.

Penner, a member of the Ducks' 2007 championship team, is expected to arrive today and can play once he obtains his work visa.

"This is (one of) those times when you look at your locker room and say, they deserve some help in strengthening our locker room, making us a better team," Lombardi told reporters at the team's practice facility in El Segundo.

Outside of El Segundo, the day was more notable for some coveted players who stayed put - Dallas Stars center Brad Richards, Oilers forward Ales Hemsky, and Florida Panthers forwards Stephen Weiss and David Booth.

The Ducks made a minor acquisition, acquiring physical forward Brad Winchester from the St. Louis Blues and sending center Maxim Lapierre to the Vancouver Canucks in separate trades.

On a day that saw most of the Western Conference's playoff contenders stay pat, Penner's arrival in Los Angeles has the most potential to change the playoff landscape.

Penner has scored at least 20 goals in four of his five NHL seasons. He had a team-leading 21 goals for the Oilers this season, and set career highs last season with 32 goals and 31 assists.

The 28-year-old power forward has a good pair of hands to go along with his 6-foot-4, 245-pound frame. He figures to fit in well with a team that covets size and the ability to play around the net, and had been looking for a left wing to pair with top center Anze Kopitar.

After being signed as a free agent out of college in 2004, Penner spent three seasons in the Anaheim organization before signing a lucrative offer sheet with Edmonton in 2007. Two seasons remain on that contract, this year and next, at $4.5 million per season. "
