Less than a month away from his 39th birthday, Nikolai Khabibulin is proving that an old goaltender can be just as effective as a young one.
Fans of the Edmonton Oilers have some experience in this department. As recently as 2009, when a 39-year old Dwayne Roloson kept the Oilers in the playoff hunt by starting 36 consecutive games down the stretch, the club has witnessed the impact a determined veteran can have between the pipes. Even so, there was little reason to expect that Khabibulin would match Roloson's achievement at the same age, particularly after the battle-scarred Russian suffered through one of the worst seasons of his illustrious career.
