"Two innings after his heel hit first base awkwardly as he tried to beat out a hit, Kevin Youkilis left last night's game with what the Red Sox called "right hamstring tightness."
Youkilis isn't likely to play tonight, according to manager Terry Francona.
"Exam was really good, full range of motion, so he should be OK," Francona said. "He's a little beat up in a lot of areas."
Youkilis came up limping after grounding to Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar in the sixth inning. He huddled in the dugout with head athletic trainer Mike Reinold and spoke briefly to Francona before hobbling to third base for the top of the seventh, clearly favoring his right leg.
Ultimately, Youkilis was replaced by Yamaico Navarro to start the eighth.
"I think we'll stay away from him (tonight)," Francona said. "Hopefully, it won't be more than that."
Drew has been getting treatment for a left shoulder impingement for several weeks, and on Saturday, he underwent an MRI exam. Before ace lefty Jon Lester was activated to start last night's rain-delayed game, manager Terry Francona said Drew was headed to the disabled list. But in a last-minute change, the Red Sox optioned rookie right-hander Kyle Weiland to Triple-A Pawtucket.
"Some of it is baseball, and some of it is personal," said Francona, who was unable to elaborate. "There's a lot of moving parts."Heading to DL"
