Kerry Collins retires from NFL

"Titans quarterback Kerry Collins is retiring from the NFL, according to his agent.

The 38 year-old Collins spent 16 years in the NFL, throwing for 40,441 yards and 206 touchdowns. He played for five NFL teams, spending his last five seasons with the Titans.

Collins led his teams to the playoffs four times as a starter, including an appearance in the NFC Championship game following the 1996 season with the Panthers and a Super Bowl appearance following the 2000 season with the New York Giants.

In Tennessee, Collins played in 43 games, starting 32 of those contests. He completed 613 of 1,081 passes for 33 touchdowns and 29 interceptions while with the Titans.

The Titans have said they are not going to sign Vince Young, leaving the quarterback candidates as rookie Jake Locker and second-year player Rusty Smith.

Here is the release from his agent:

"After 16 fulfilling years of playing quarterback in the NFL, I am officially announcing my retirement from professional football. The past several months have brought on much introspection, and I have decided that while my desire to compete on Sundays is still and always will be there, my willingness to commit to the preparation necessary to play another season has waned to a level that I feel is no longer adequate to meet the demands of the position.
