"When the door to Mike Scioscia's office is closed before a game, it's a safe bet that something is going on. When it's closed for at least 40 minutes, it's a certainty.
Before Wednesday's game with Tampa Bay, Scioscia met with pitching coach Mike Butcher and struggling left-hander Scott Kazmir to discuss plans on how to best get Kazmir back on track. After allowing three runs on seven hits in just 5.0 innings in a loss Tuesday, Scioscia acknowledged that skipping Kazmir is an option.
However, after Wednesday's meeting, it appears Kazmir will be on the mound for his next scheduled start - against Texas next Monday.
"We just wanted to get an understanding of where he felt he was, some adjustments that needed to be made and considered if he needed a little time to make those adjustments. He doesn't think so. Mike Butcher doesn't think so," Scioscia said. "He's going to start Monday in Texas and have a good bullpen session in the interim."
In his six starts this season, Kazmir is 2-4 with a 6.82 ERA. He's worked past the sixth inning in just one of his starts this season.
"Confidence-wise, it seems like I'm there," Kazmir said. "I just have to go out there and execute."
Kazmir said Butcher noticed a change in his arm angle, with the ball coming for a three-quarter slot instead of from over the top of his shoulder. Kazmir called it a bad habit developed after injuring his elbow in 2007."
