Spring training numbers are not indicative of what is to come in the regular season. For example, Justin Verlander is bound to give up a run sometime in 2014.

But he didn't this spring.

Verlander finished Grapefruit League play 4-for-4 in scoreless outings after striking out seven in 6 1/3 shutout innings Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
"Pretty well," Verlander said in describing his day. "Fastball control was good. Offspeed stuff was good. Can't ask for much more than that going into the season."

Verlander retired 16 consecutive batters at one point and 19 of the 21 he faced overall. He allowed a single to Chase Utley with two outs in the first, then did not allow another Phillies player to reach base until Jimmy Rollins walked to lead off the seventh.

"I was efficient, and that comes back to my fastball control," Verlander said. "I was able to locate it pretty well and get ahead of a lot of guys. It was a good day."
