Juan Mata is expected to arrive at Manchester United's training ground on Thursday to move his proposed 37 million pound transfer from Chelsea one step closer to completion.

Mata, 25, is set to swap Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford after becoming a peripheral figure since Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea last summer.

The Spain international missed training at the Blues' Cobham training ground on Wednesday as he prepares to undergo a medical and agree personal terms with the Premier League champions.

According to ESPN sources, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid were Chelsea's preferred options for a sale rather than selling to a direct rival, but they accepted the bid from United after Mata made it clear that Old Trafford was his first choice.

Mourinho already has Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schuerrle and a rapidly improving Willian in his squad to cover the attacking midfield positions, while the Daily Telegraph reports that Chelsea are set to make a bid for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

The Telegraph also reports that the former Valencia playmaker will open negotiations over a deal that will be worth more than double his current 70,000-a-week contract at Chelsea, but the promise of regular first-team football in the run-up to this summer's World Cup finals may be just as much of a draw for him.
