Josh Willingham ready to try right field

"Josh Willingham readily acknowledges that right field is not his best position. But the newest Twins outfielder is confident he'll figure it out. Though he has started just 33 games in right, he has played hundreds in left.

"Hopefully this spring I'll just get a lot of reps out there and get comfortable. That's the goal," he said. "Playing on the opposite end of the field, it's different, the way the balls come off the bat, so it'll just take a little bit of time to get used to."

Willingham, 32, signed a three-year, $21 million contract this winter to replace Michael Cuddyer, whose primary position was right field, though Cuddyer wound up playing a lot of first base to fill in for oft-injured Justin Morneau the past few seasons. In many ways, what's important for Willingham to replicate is Cuddyer's offense, and history suggests he will. Last season in Oakland, Willingham hit 29 homers and knocked in 98 runs.

The Twins don't play in a power-friendly park, but neither do the A's. Willingham hit a homer off right-hander Scott Baker at Target Field last season but said he doesn't know much about the place. "Only what you hear," he said. "
