Josh Hamilton's grand slam forces carpet company to pay up

"Josh Hamilton hit a grand slam home run Wednesday night - now a local carpet company has to pay up.

CC Carpet sponsored a promotion that if Hamilton hit a grand slam from Aug. 29 to Sept. 28, customers who purchased and installed flooring or countertops during the period - and prior to Hamilton's grand slam - got their purchases refunded.

""Let me tell you something, this is a great thing," CC Carpet president Steve Fitzgerald said Wednesday night, about an hour after Hamilton's fourth-inning slam against Cleveland. "I only wish more people would have gotten in (on the deal) before it happened."

Fitzgerald said that when he left the office Wednesday evening, more than $500,000 of flooring and countertops had been purchased during the promotion period. He said it's all covered by an insurance policy.

This was the fourth time since the promotion began that Hamilton came to bat with the bases loaded. The first occurred on Sept. 1. Hamilton had met Fitzgerald before that game.

"He asked me, 'Should I hit it?' " Fitzgerald recalled. "I said, 'You do whatever you have to do to win the game.' ""
