"Rangers OF Josh Hamilton said Saturday his deadline for executing a contract extension that would keep him from exploring free agency is the start of spring training.

Prior to his appearance at Rangers Fan Fest, Hamilton said he wants to focus on the 2012 season. And, for him, the season starts when he reports to spring training. In the second year of a two-year deal, Hamilton can become a free agent after the coming season.

Told the Rangers have historically gotten more serious with core players about extensions during spring training, Hamilton smiled.

"Let's change that," he said."
