Tampa Bay took Hamilton with the first overall pick in the 1999 draft, but his career was derailed by substance abuse. Hamilton missed three full seasons (2003-05) while confronting his personal problems and never played in the majors with the Rays.

Hamilton has regretted what happened during his time with the Rays. On Monday he sought out several Rays' staffers from his time with the club, mostly with the athletic-training department, and apologized for his actions."
