Jorge Cantu sets RBI record in Marlins' win over Reds

"Entering Wednesday's game, no other National League player had come up with more runners on base than Jorge Cantu. His fifth inning turn on Wednesday was one of those rare occasions he batted with the bases empty.

That meant if Cantu was going to make baseball history he would have to do it with a home run. He got it.

Cantu tagged Homer Bailey's 2-1 offering into the blue seats in left, making him the first player since the RBI became an official stat in 1920 to knock in a run in each of his team's first nine games. The historic blast contributed to a 5-3 Marlins win over the Reds at Sun Life Stadium.

"It's a great honor what I just did and it's a great job as much collectively as individually," Cantu said. "If it wasn't for my teammates, I wouldn't be in the spot I am now. I'm trying to stay focused, keep pushing myself and at the same time push my teammates. It's an individual goal I just did, but at the same time as a team we have to win games."

Cantu began the night with a share of the record Hall of Famer George Kelly set in 1921with the Giants. Willie McCovey (1969) and Tony Oliva (1970) would later match it. Of that quartet, Kelly and Cantu are the only ones to do it with a hit in each of the nine games as well.

Dating back to last season, Cantu has a 13-game hitting streak. His hit and RBI streak also stands at 13, the longest such run since Mike Piazza did it in 15 straight from June 14-July 2, 2000.

In addition, no Marlin has reached the 14-RBI mark in as quickly in terms of team games than Cantu.

"I accomplished something very big," Cantu said. "It hit me when I was rounding the bases."

In the first inning, Cantu came up with the bases loaded but grounded into a double play. He led off the fourth and struck out looking before finally connecting on the Bailey off speed pitch in the fifth."
