"Reds outfielder Jonny Gomes spent Thursday morning dousing the flames from the Adam Wainwright controversy.

Gomes started an internet brush fire Wednesday when a report came out that he had celebrated a season-ending injury to Wainwright, the St. Louis Cardinals ace, by singing "Wainwright gone, Wainwright gone" in the Reds clubhouse.

"I want to answer as many questions about it as I can," Gomes said. "I want to put it to bed. I'm not running from it."

Gomes said he reached out to the Cardinals through a friend he has on the club, through Reds media relations director Rob Butcher and through his agents.

"I would never wish an injury on anyone," Gomes said.
