"David Jones' play had been as nondescript as his name much of the past few games, but not Tuesday night when the Avalanche needed a big-name, big-game performance.
The British Columbia native, who grew up a big fan of the Vancouver Canucks, scored his second goal of the game in overtime to give the Avalanche a gritty 4-3 victory over the NHL points-leading Canucks at the Pepsi Center.
Despite a crowd of only 12,791 for a game against their division foes, the Avs had everyone standing at the end when Jones put home a loose puck in the crease past Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo at 2:52 of OT.
The Avs overcame three one-goal deficits and got tremendous games as well from John-Michael Liles (one goal, two assists), Milan
Hej-duk (goal, two assists) and goalie Craig Anderson (40 saves).
"You never want to be down to that team. It's tough playing from behind," said Jones, whose goals were his 15th and 16th of the season. "But I think it's just a matter of getting pucks on Luongo, getting traffic on him, because anytime you do that, good things are going to happen."
Jones had been pointless in four of his last five games, with a minus-3 in his last two.
But he was all over the place in this one, getting six of Colorado's 30 shots on Luongo.
The winning goal came after Tomas Fleischmann — who is proving to have a knack for late-game heroics — faked Luongo off to his right and slipped a shot into the crease, which left a rebound for Jones crashing the net."
