Johnny Manziel has been trying to do his part this recruiting season to help his alma mater land some of the top players in the country, but the former Texas A&M quarterback is going to have to tone that down — at least publicly.

On Wednesday, which was National Signing Day for college football, Manziel tweeted that he has been told he can no longer reach out to recruits due to “controversial NCAA rules.”

As Alex Miller of the Dallas Morning News notes, the rules are pretty clear in this instance. NCAA bylaw 13.02.13 (c) states that former players cannot “be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.”
