John Tortorella's stormy reign as the Rangers' head coach came to a sudden end today as the team fired him with one year remaining on his contract.

The Rangers reached the postseason four times in five tries once Tortorella replaced Tom Renney on Feb. 23, 2009, including reaching the Eastern Conference finals in 2012.

But the Rangers were meekly eliminated by the Bruins in five games in this year's conference semifinals, leading to speculation Tortorella would be fired.

That playoff series was marked by Tortorella making center Brad Richards a healthy scratch the final two games. Richards, signed to a nine-year, $60 million deal in 2011, is now a candidate to be bought out.
