The Red Sox are ready to deploy Andrew Benintendi after a three-week layoff due to a sprained left knee, but they aren’t forgetting about Chris Young.

Young, the 33-year-old veteran who is hitting .287 with a .915 OPS this season, got the start in left field on Wednesday while Benintendi was on the bench for his second straight day since being declared healthy enough to play.

“We’ve got a guy, a right-hander in Kevin Gausman, who has some reverse splits, so we’re just looking at how we match up,” manager John Farrell said. “Andrew hasn’t been in a game in three weeks. Maybe the importance of tonight, in terms of this particular series. We’ve got three right-handers coming in New York so I’m sure Andrew will be on the field in that series.”
