Joey Votto says his hitting more doubles this year is a result of trying to do less.

"I would say it's a point of concentration," he said. "I got a little too fixated with homers last year. I thought I had to hit homers. I thought I had to pull home runs. I got away from what my strengths are, which is putting together really good at-bats and dealing with what I have presented in front of me and making the best out of it.

"Instead, last year, I tried to make things happen. This year, I feel like I'm more taking what's given to me."

Votto led the major leagues in doubles with 21, entering Tuesday's game. He led the National League in walks (43), slugging percentage (.601) and on-base plus slugging (1.068). He was hitting .372 in his last 23 games.
