"Dolphins outside linebacker Joey Porter endured injuries, a one-game benching and a reduced role during a frustrating season.
Now he is wondering if he'll have to take a major financial hit and find a new team, an NFL source familiar with the situation said Wednesday.
The Dolphins have until March 4 to release Porter or pay him a $1 million roster bonus.
"That has not been decided yet," coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday during a break from his coaching duties at the Senior Bowl. "And that's it."
Porter also is scheduled to earn a base salary of $3.8 million in 2010, plus a $200,000 workout bonus.
If Miami releases Porter, the team owes him nothing.
His future with the Dolphins became a hot topic because of a radio interview he did last week in his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif.
During the interview, Porter expressed his frustration with last season and wondered if he would be back after three seasons with Miami.
Porter also reportedly said he wanted to leave the Dolphins, but the NFL source said Porter denied that. (A transcript of the interview was not available.)
Dolphins General manager Jeff Ireland said Wednesday that he hadn't heard the interview, but that there were no imminent plans or concerns regarding Porter.
"There is no fire," Ireland said.
Ireland also said Porter has not told the organization he wants to leave."
