Joey Porter says he 'felt like an outcast'

"Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter continued his bridge-burning media tour Tuesday, hinting at a locker-room rift and saying he felt like an "outcast" while rarely speaking to coach Tony Sparano after a midseason benching.

"The last seven weeks of the season was no fun for me," Porter said during an appearance on WQAM. "Only time I talked to [Sparano] was on game day."

That coach-player relationship went sour, Porter said, after Sparano benched him for the Nov. 15 Tampa Bay game after Porter was spotted out late on a Friday night. Porter said his dinner ended by 10:30, but he was still forced to sit due to a "coach's decision."

After that, Porter said, "the writing was on the wall," and club officials Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland shunned him as well.

"Nobody saying nothing to you no more," Porter said. "I felt like an outcast."

That treatment extended to captain's meetings with Sparano that included only fellow linebacker Jason Taylor in the second half of the year. Porter was no longer invited, he said, and fellow co-captains Jason Ferguson and Chad Pennington had suffered season-ending injuries.

Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder, co-hosting the WQAM show on which Porter appeared, seemed to side with Porter in his portrayal of the post-benching locker room environment.

"It was an uncomfortable situation amongst the team," Crowder said. "I know I'm not the only player that thinks that. I know a lot of other guys think that way too. Peezy's a great guy.""
