Joe Nathan unfazed by rocky outing

"Joe Nathan's smooth spring training hit a six-run snag Sunday afternoon in the Twins' 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Hammond Stadium.

The right-handed reliever managed only one out, but in fairness he wasn't the only one who had difficulty getting through the inning.

Center fielder Ben Revere lost a fly ball in the sun that landed for a double; second baseman Matt Tolbert was out of position — manager Ron Gardenhire said — to field a bunt, turning another would-be out into a single; and Delmon Young dropped a fly ball in foul territory.

These were the first runs Nathan has allowed this spring. He had pitched four scoreless innings prior, but afterward he said he was unconcerned with the results.

"Stuff like that happens, and the good thing for me is it got me to be in some situations that I haven't been in a whole lot this spring," he said. "Not a pretty inning by any means, but a good thing that I came out of it and felt good. If I'm going to throw a lot of pitches like that, at least it felt good."

Nathan gave up that double in the sun, then the bunt single and two more doubles. He got a groundout before walking a batter and giving up a three-run homer to Delwyn Young.

"Results are what they are," Nathan said. "That's what spring training's for. Hopefully, we can get as many of these out of the way so we don't see them during the year." "
