Twins hometown hero Joe Mauer has been placed on waivers for the purpose of gauging trade interest in the all-star catcher, according to a report on

Fox's Ken Rosenthal, citing a major league source, said the Boston Red Sox might be interested in making a deal for Mauer, who is 29 and has six years and more than $140 million remaining on the contract he signed in 2010.

Such waiver moves are not uncommon for major league players with hefty contracts. The Red Sox, and any other team interested in adding the three-time American League batting champion, has until noon today to make a claim.
