"Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain faces the possibility of season-ending elbow surgery after an MRI revealed a torn ligament in his right elbow.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi called the situation a head scratcher. Chamberlain hadn't shown symptoms associated with a torn ligament.
Girardi said Chamberlain is unsure of how long he's been injured.
Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday . After Rafael Soriano went on the disabled list in May, he served as the eighth inning bridge to closer Mariano River.
Chamberlain had a 2.83 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 27 appearances and had gone his last 9 2/3 innings without allowing a run. "
