Jameis Winston is responsible for James Winston. Nobody else. Not a graduate assistant. Not a teammate.

That is the tact Jimbo Fisher is taking with the most famous athlete in FSU history. Fisher is not leaving Winston out on an island alone – the Seminoles still will monitor the troubled QB and attempt to limit outside distractions to a point – but they will not be tailing Winston or putting him on something akin to athletic house arrest.

“To keep someone on somebody 24 hours a day is a very difficult situation,” Fisher told me Thursday and I wrote in today’s Palm Beach Post. “You enable them if you’re not careful. You still have to be responsible for your own actions.

“We will always monitor our players and we have to monitor him more because he does get more attention. But at the same time he has to be his own man and be able to do the things he has to do.”

Winston, 20, has had three minor incidents in which authorities were involved since arriving in Tallahassee, along with the more serious sexual assault investigation last October in which authorities did not prosecute due to lack of evidence. He has never been charged with a crime. In April, Winston shoplifted $32.72 worth of seafood from a Tallahassee supermarket. He was offered a civil citation because the shoplifting was considered a minor crime and he has no criminal history. He was required to complete 20 hours of community service.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office released security video of Winston ordering and picking out his seafood and leaving the supermarket on Thursday .

After the latest incident Fisher spoke with Winston about the “burden” he carries as the “face” of Florida State. Fisher said several times he is not making excuses for Winston and Winston is responsible for his actions, but he acknowledged that Winston is under unfair scrutiny since being thrust into the national spotlight.

‘“You have to be aware of what you are and what’s going on and you can’t make those mistakes anymore because you carry a huge burden. You’re the face of our university. You’re the face of our football team,’’’ Fisher said the told Winston.
