The University of Akron has identified 19 men and women who are being considered for president, including Jim Tressel, who until now had not indicated he was interested in succeeding Luis Proenza.

Tressel, executive vice president for student success at the university and former Ohio State University football coach, initially proposed that he be named an interim president but a month later submitted his application.

On January 25 he wrote that he should be named interim president as an alternative option. But on February 25 he submitted a letter as "my enthusiastic application" for president.

He said the university is at a crossroads that an external candidate may not be able to "competitively navigate." He wrote the first phase of his presidency would involve ""tough, transparent decisions that would be disruptive to the status quo" to stabilize the university's fiscal health.

Tressel is also being promoted by community leaders to become the next president of Youngstown State University, following the recent resignation of President Randy Dunn.

Tressel, who has a master's degree, is among candidates for the University of Akron presidency that include a doctor, a lawyer, former presidents and those in top administrative positions.

Other local candidates are UA law professor Martin Belsky and Ronald Bucci, interim vice president for professional and support services at Akron Children's Hospital.

The university, in an update sent to the campus community today, said the Presidential Advisory and Screening Committee is continuing to accept applications.

The committee will recommend finalists who will visit campus, likely in April, and meet with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.
