Jets release wide receiver Laveranues Coles

"The Jets have a new item on their offseason wish list: A starting wide receiver.

Rejecting Laveranues Coles' latest request for a long-term contract extension, the Jets reached an unusual compromise Wednesday with the veteran receiver that resulted in his freedom. They granted him a fast-pass to free agency, voiding the final year of his contract. In return, Coles forfeited a guaranteed base salary of $6million from the Jets.

"I'm leaving $6million on the table," he told the Daily News. "It's a roll of the dice, but I thought it would be in my best interest to try free agency."

Coles, who will become a free agent at midnight, said he parted on good terms with the Jets and didn't rule out the possibility of re-signing with them. But that seems unlikely, considering two teams already have invited him for recruiting visits. He declined to name the teams, although a Miami reunion with close friend Chad Pennington is possible.

GM Mike Tannenbaum, in a statement released by the team, didn't explain why he would let a starter walk away with a year remaining on his contract, receiving no compensation.

"This move will allow Laveranues to explore his options, and we both agreed to keep the lines of communication open," Tannenbaum said.

Suddenly, the Jets have some serious holes on offense. Quarterback Brett Favre retired, tight end Chris Baker was released, fullback Tony Richardson still is unsigned and guard Brandon Moore is expected to be released. Rex Ryan's lofty ambition for his defense had better be on the mark because, as it stands now, the Jets won't be lighting up the scoreboard."
