Jets' receiving corps moving ahead with Plaxico Burress, Derrick Mason

"This afternoon's practice was the longest and hottest so far during training camp - but for the Jets, it must have been worth it.

Plaxico Burress was dressed in full pads and a helmet and managed to sneak in one play with the first-team offense. And the three-hour session lasted long enough for Derrick Mason to be signed and delivered to Florham Park, slapping fives with his new teammates as he watched the end of practice.

With the first preseason game one week away, the team's receiving corps is assembled and ready to build rapport with quarterback Mark Sanchez - something that had been a work-in-progress over the past week.

"When you add Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason and say that your receiving corps got worse, I don't know how accurate that is," coach Rex Ryan said. "I guess we'll get a chance to prove it out in the regular season."

It may take that long for new additions Burress and Mason to synch up with Sanchez. Both are veterans who pride themselves on absorbing playbooks quickly, and possess a vast knowledge of the game, but the time frame for assimilating into the offense has been greatly condensed.

Burress, who was released in June from a 20-month prison sentence for illegal gun possession, delayed his return to the field when he rolled his untaped left ankle while running routes with Santonio Holmes Wednesday. He participated in only the walk-through Thursday and Friday, but was cleared for individual drills today.

He dressed in full NFL uniform for the first time in nearly three years and, when he thought coach Rex Ryan wasn't looking, slipped onto the field for one rep in 11-on-11 team drills. After a sprint-out pass from Sanchez missed the mark, Ryan promptly yanked Burress, intent on playing it safe with his ankle."
