"Jerricho Cotchery hovered near the first-down marker at midfield in overtime Sunday, hobbling on a groin that an MRI would later reveal as slightly torn.
As Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez evaded a pass rush, the banged-up receiver became the primary target. Sanchez pointed, and fired. Cotchery leapt, fully extended, and came down with the grab, on third-and-9.
It was what coach Rex Ryan would come to call something "I've never seen in all the years I've been coaching."
It was the main attraction in a screening of video highlight reel called "Play like a Jet" - an assortment of plays Ryan feels embody the style of football he wants from his players. It remained the talk of the locker room a day later.
"I didn't think Mark was going to treat me like an available receiver at that point in time," Cotchery said, laughing, Monday. "I just tried to make that catch for him."
As for the injury, Cotchery said that he has not been given a timetable for his return and has not been ruled out for Sunday. Normally a more serious injury gets a timetable right away, he said. He started treatment on Sunday which involved ice, stimulation, cold tubs and tissue massage. After two such treatments Sunday night and Monday morning, the pain and swelling had decreased."
