"The Jets still are waiting on word from wide receiver Derrick Mason. The team made him an offer Thursday but there were reports he is deciding between the Jets, Ravens and Titans. The veteran receiver has played for both of the other teams.
Jets coach Rex Ryan said Mason has offers for more money to play elsewhere.
"I, obviously, would like to get Derrick right now, but he's got other teams, he's got other things like that, and I'm sure he'd have to leave money on the table to come here," Ryan said.
The Jets released longtime receiver Jerricho Cotchery on Thursday. It was believed they were releasing him because they signed Mason, but Ryan said that was not the case. Cotchery asked to be traded or released. Ryan was asked if it would have been wiser to wait until they had Cotchery's replacement in the fold before getting rid of him.
"I'm a man of my word, and if I say something, then I'll do it," Ryan said. "If I tell you that we would give you permission to seek a trade or release you if we had picked up somebody, then that's what we're going to do. We'll be OK one way or another, but if I give you my word, then that's what it is. You have my word. That's why I tried to explain about the Derrick Mason thing. It wasn't like we were signing Derrick and letting Jerricho go. That was not it."
The Tennessean reported the Titans have expressed interest in signing Cotchery."
