Jets Coles and Smith recovering from concussions, Coles expected to play Sunday

"Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles suffered a "mild" concussion last week against the Raiders and is expected to play on Sunday against the Chiefs barring any setbacks, according to someone with knowledge of Coles' health.

That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for Coles or the Jets.

Coles is scheduled to see a neurologist Friday and if he's given a clean bill of health, which is expected, he'll be cleared to play.

Thursday, Jets coach Eric Mangini finally came clean, announcing that Coles and safety Eric Smith did, in fact, suffer concussions in last week's 16-13 overtime loss to the Raiders.

Mangini, who treats injuries like nuclear secrets, has rarely, if ever, confirmed that a player has a concussion. He has always listed a concussion as a "head" injury. Concussions are a hot-button issue in the league.

"I just listed it that way because I list all the body parts," Mangini said.

For the hard-playing Coles, it was his third concussion in 22 months. The news is even more alarming for Smith. It was his second in three weeks.

Coles, who has 30 receptions for 369 yards and four touchdowns this season (all team highs), participated in a few light drills during the 30-minute portion of practice open to the media. But he was listed as not having practiced, meaning he didn't participate in any 11-on-11 drills.

Smith was listed as limited in practice. He, too, did light work in front of the media. It's uncertain if Smith will play against the Chiefs. Abram Elam took reps with the first-team in practice.

"I feel comfortable with the doctors and the process we have in place," he said. "I rely on them to make those decisions ... and not pressure anybody to do something that's medically unsound.""
