"The Jets' front office wasted no time beginning its pursuit of free- agent wide receiver Santonio Holmes, and the team may get an assist from quarterback Mark Sanchez.
The Jets were the first team to talk with Holmes' agent, Joel Segal, yesterday morning, and made the wide receiver an offer later in the day, according to a source. Holmes is one of the top free agents on the market and is going to command big money. Sanchez said he is willing to restructure his contract to give the Jets cap space to pursue Holmes and other free agents.
"My agent's already talked to me about it," Sanchez said. "Whatever we need to do to win, it's on. I think our whole team feels that way. If [Darrelle] Revis, me, whoever, it doesn't matter. ... We'll do whatever we can."
Sanchez, who is entering his third season, has a salary-cap figure of $17.7 million. The Jets are not in a dire cap situation but could use some help if they hope to bring back Holmes and/or Braylon Edwards at wide receiver and cornerback Antonio Cromartie, as well as other pieces.
As the Jets players began reporting back to the team's facility at 10 a.m., general manager Mike Tannenbaum was on the phone with Segal, getting a jump on the competition for Holmes. Segal said shortly after talking to the Jets he spoke with two other teams.
"We've had good communications," Segal said.
Sanchez said he hopes the team can retain all of its free agents, and if reworking his contract would help, he was all for it."
