When Derek Jeter spoke with people impacted by 9/11, the man known for his cool had trouble finding the right words.

"It was awkward because you meet people who just lost family members. What do you say?" Jeter once told me.

But Jeter understands that it means a lot to fans, even if doesn't change the reality of the situation. It seems Jeter also realized that a simple call to the mother of Yankees fan Victoria Soto was a proper gesture. Soto was the 27-year-old teacher killed protecting her Sandy Hook Elementary School students Friday.
