Jerod Mayo pleased, impressed with players' workouts

"It will take more than a lockout to change some well-known characteristics of coach Bill Belichick's team.

Patriots players held three workouts at Boston College last week, well-organized sessions that did not include coaches or playbooks. But those who took part lauded the experience, saying the learning was valuable, and the camaraderie was enjoyable.

As for the fact that there was little fanfare or hoopla — and limited access to the prying eyes of reporters — that was fitting.

"Hey, the Patriot Way still lives on," said a laughing captain Jerod Mayo, who helped spread the word for the defensive players. "You know (reporters) weren't allowed in, so we're still doing it the Patriot Way. Working hard behind the scenes."

In all seriousness, Mayo was even surprised by how fruitful the workouts were. The linebacker joined quarterback Tom Brady and nose tackle Vince Wilfork as the key voices in organizing the unofficial minicamp, yet no one was sure whether it would be valuable.

"But it exceeded my expectations," Mayo told the Herald. "Guys were out there competing and did a good job. For the most part, guys have been in shape. They came in in shape, everyone's working hard."

Mayo made his comments alongside tight end Rob Gronkowski and linebacker Dane Fletcher, who all woke up early yesterday to partake in the One Mission's Kids Cancer Buzz-off at Gillette Stadium's Fidelity Investment Clubhouse. For the charity that raised more than $137,000, each player shaved a participant's head to benefit Children's Hospital Boston's Pediatric Oncology unit and children battling cancer and their families. By the end, 116 New Englanders left with buzz cuts, including more than 20 women.

"It's a way that we can express our support for the little kids that are going through cancer treatment right now who won't have a choice but to lose their hair," said One Mission co-founder Ari Haseotes, who had his head shaved by Mayo. "It's amazing to watch these people. Many of them have no connection to cancer and children with cancer, but they are making a commitment on a beautiful day in June."

Gronkowski shaved the head of fellow supporter and Boston University hockey player Ryan Santana, while Fletcher shaved the head of Wade Megan, Santana's teammate. All parties listened as Fletcher trash-talked with Gronkowski for his struggles with the clippers. And before it ended, Jerod Mayo's brother Deron left with no hair."
