"Over the last three years, Greg Jennings felt good about his work ethic and what he's done to get better in the offseason.
Then last month he spent two weeks working out at Larry Fitzgerald's receivers camp in Minneapolis.
The invitation-only clinic included about 30 NFL receivers and defensive backs, and featured tutorials from Jerry Rice, arguably the greatest receiver in NFL history, and Cris Carter, who was one of 15 finalists in voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year.
Yet, as valuable as it was to be learn nuances of his craft from two noted sticklers for details, the most eye-opening part of the camp for Jennings was competing with Fitzgerald, who's the NFL's premier receiver.
"My mindset is work hard in the offseason, and I'm trying to be the best," Jennings said. "(But) when I saw his work ethic, where he is already, he's trying to leave everybody behind. This guy is serious about this. He took my whole mindset of working out to another level."
Jennings and Fitzgerald share the same agent but hardly knew each other when Fitzgerald called the Green Bay Packers receiver to join his pre-training camp workouts, which he expanded this summer into a more formal camp at the University of Minnesota's new football stadium. In the two weeks, Jennings and Fitzgerald quickly forged a good friendship and better rivalry.
Though the camp featured other top receivers Brandon Marshall of Denver and Lee Evans of Buffalo, Jennings quickly targeted Fitzgerald as the man to chase. Fitzgerald, the Arizona Cardinals' standout, is a big-play receiver who specializes in contorting his 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame to make acrobatic catches downfield. He has 196 receptions and 22 touchdowns combined over the past two seasons; Jennings, who has become the Packers' top playmaker, has 160 catches and 18 touchdowns over that same time."
