"Having come up short on the biggest stage of his professional career, a dejected Coach Jeff Fisher walked off the field after Super Bowl XXXIV as the other team celebrated.
On Friday that other team — the St. Louis Rams — celebrated for a different reason. The longtime coach of the Titans finally decided to return to the sideline with the Rams instead of the Miami Dolphins.
"Obviously it is ironic," said former NFL defensive lineman Kevin Carter, who played for the Rams in that Super Bowl and later played for Fisher with the Titans. "But I think for that reason, there is a tremendous amount of respect for Jeff Fisher, and the team that he assembled year after year.
"Coach Fisher will bring a brand of toughness to the Rams. And he'll bring an edge to the team. I think the irony will be great, and the city of St. Louis, if they're smart, will embrace Jeff Fisher because he is a great, great coach."
Other former and current Titans agreed with Carter, saying Fisher is the right choice and a good fit to turn around a team that finished 2-14 last season.
Fisher and the Titans parted ways last January after 17 seasons and 147 wins. While Mike Munchak took over the Titans, Fisher spent the year making motivational speeches, consulting for the NFL's competition committee, spending time with family and watching his son play at Auburn."
