Fisher: Vince Young still starting QB

"Titans Coach Jeff Fisher suspects he has ticked off his starting quarterback. Now he expects Vince Young to respond by putting Sunday's benching behind him and working to get better.

On Monday, Fisher stood by his controversial decision and reiterated Young would remain the starter going forward, beginning this Sunday when the Titans (1-1) visit the Giants (1-1).

Fisher pulled a struggling Young in the fourth quarter of a 19-11 loss to the Steelers and inserted Kerry Collins, who passed for 149 yards and led a touchdown drive but also threw an interception and fumbled twice.

"I made the decision and it is not carrying over,'' Fisher said. "(Young) is our starter this week and beyond. He doesn't need to look over his shoulder. We needed to throw it to catch up to have a chance to win and Kerry's had a lot more experience with (Pittsburgh's) defense.

"In time Vince will be able to do those kind of things. It is kind of a one-time thing and it is an issue we have put behind us.''

Young threw two interceptions, fumbled twice and passed for 66 yards against Pittsburgh's 3-4 — a defensive scheme he's struggled with before — on a day the Titans had seven turnovers and rushed for 46 yards.

"As coaches we probably had too much in the gameplan," Fisher said. "We probably asked too much of our offense against this defense."

But Fisher said if he had to do it over, he still would have benched Young.

"He shouldn't like it. Anybody you take out of the game, do you expect him to like it? No, he shouldn't like it,'' Fisher said. "And I would expect any player that was replaced for whatever reason not to be happy with it. But what you do is you come back to work, you work harder, you learn from it and you improve. The position is not an easy position to play.''

There are indications that Young reported to the practice facility last Tuesday, a scheduled off day, to spend extra time preparing for the Steelers. He was excused for part of a meeting on Wednesday but caught up on what he missed."
