"If the Florida Marlins reach the playoffs next season because of key contributions from catcher John Buck, infielder Omar Infante, reliever Mike Dunn and starting pitcher Javier Vazquez, they can thank one man: Dan Uggla.
The Marlins continued to reallocate ``Uggla money'' -- money that would have gone toward the second baseman's contract had he not rejected their multi-year offer -- by reaching agreement with the veteran Vazquez on a one-year deal Sunday, according to sources.
Vazquez, 34, is a durable right-hander who will add seasoning to a relatively young rotation that already includes Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez and Chris Volstad.
A veteran of 13 major-league seasons with five teams, Vazquez owns a career record of 152-149 and an earned-run average of 4.26. But the numbers that best identify Vazquez are his games started and innings pitched."
