Jason Hanson has talked about it for years.

There are a lot of moving parts to a kicker's success. The snap. The hold. The protection. The coverage. The coaching philosophy. The strategy. Oh, yeah -- and the kick.

This season, there will be even more -- perhaps a lot more -- moving parts in the whole kicking equation. It could start with Hanson no longer kicking for the Lions after 21 seasons.

Hanson, 42, is not currently a Lion for the first time since he was drafted in 1992. He has told the team he wants to return for a 22nd season, but negotiations so far have gone nowhere.

The Lions are scheduled to host Hanson's replacement this week when veteran free-agent kicker David Akers, 38, visits Allen Park.
