"An injury to Raiders starting quarterback Jason Campbell midway through the second quarter Saturday night shattered coach Tom Cable's hope that his team would make it through training camp relatively healthy.
Campbell was carted off the field after being sacked by 49ers linebacker Travis LaBoy. A Raiders official said Campbell suffered a stinger, which is described as a nerve injury caused by trauma to the neck and shoulder.
Campbell was examined in the locker room and later rejoined his teammates on the sideline for the second half of the 28-24 exhibition loss to the 49ers at the Oakland Coliseum.
When asked if he expects Campbell back for the regular-season opener Sept. 12, Cable said, "Yeah, I do. At this point, it does not seem to be a serious issue."
"It felt a lot worse at the time that it happened, but, thank God, they don't think it's going to be really, really serious," Campbell said. "But at the same time, it's something we've got to take care of before the season starts."
Several medical websites said it takes several weeks, and even months, for a recovery from a severe stinger. There's also the risk of the injury becoming a recurring one.
The injury occurred when LaBoy sprinted around the right side of the Raiders line, out of the reach of left offensive tackle Mario Henderson, and drilled Campbell from behind.
Campbell's head snapped back as LaBoy hit him with the full force of his 250-pound frame.
Campbell lay on the turf for several minutes as trainers attended to him.
"It's tough when you see anybody go down, especially when it's your quarterback," right guard Cooper Carlisle said. "As offensive linemen, we feel responsible for the quarterback's safety."
After five minutes or so, Campbell was helped to his feet and escorted to the cart. He rode off in the passenger seat."
