"Jameer Nelson tested his sprained left knee Tuesday afternoon, and Nelson and team medical staff will wait to see how the joint responds before deciding whether he'll play tonight against the Atlanta Hawks.
Nelson accompanied teammates Malik Allen, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass, Earl Clark and Daniel Orton and assistant coaches Bob Beyer, Steve Clifford and Patrick Ewing to Philips Arena for an optional workout. Some players shot baskets on the Hawks' practice court while others lifted weights.
"I'm not going to say it's for sure that I'm going to go" play, Nelson said afterward. "I'm going to play it by ear and be smart about it and let my body tell me what to do."
Nelson sustained the injury when a New Jersey Nets player fell into the side of Nelson's leg on Friday. An MRI revealed no structural damage, but with the playoffs looming, the Magic will be cautious.
The Magic and the Atlanta Hawks are all but certain to face each other in the first round of the playoffs. After Orlando dominated Atlanta in last year's second round of the playoffs, Hawks players and their head coach are saying tonight's game is important.
Atlanta has beaten Orlando twice in three games this season."
