"The tinny notes of "Ice Ice Baby" began playing on the Jaguars' practice field this week, and for just a few seconds, rookie receivers Cecil Shorts and Armon Binns began dancing to it, side by side.
It was a light moment, but for Binns, this isn't a very lighthearted time. Cuts are coming soon.
"There definitely is anxiety. It's definitely something that's in your mind heavy," Binns said. "You're hounding on every rep. You're always thinking about what could I have done better here.
" ... Being a rookie, you've never seen stuff like this. People here one day, gone the next day. You've just got to try not to let it bother you and affect your play."
Against the St. Louis Rams today, the 17 undrafted rookies remaining on the Jaguars' roster will have one last chance to make their pitches. By Saturday, the Jaguars will have to cut their roster from 80 to 53 and can put eight players on the practice squad. They began camp with 90 players.
A handful of undrafted rookies stood out. On his weekly radio show, Jaguars general manager Gene Smith named cornerback Kevin Rutland the unsung player of the week after Jacksonville's game in Buffalo this weekend. He had a pass breakup that could've been an interception, and he made plays on special teams, too.
"Even before I got to this level, I was always told that's what you do," Rutland said. "You have to compete on special teams and do what you can on defense when the opportunity is there.""
