Jaguars receivers look to grab spotlight against Carolina

"As the Jaguars turn to Blaine Gabbert this week, inexperienced, but with a strong arm and the chutzpah to throw into windows not all quarterbacks can, their passing offense will try to rebound from last week against the New York Jets.

The Jaguars will go against Carolina's pass defense, ranked 26th in the NFL, on Sunday. And while the offense will still run through running back Maurice Jones-Drew, if they succeed, it'll give the Jaguars an opportunity to shine more light on their receiving group, a position group little-known throughout the league.

"Two of the guys that are part of that that make you feel good [about the receivers] were not available, and they have some pretty good people that can shut down a few others, and then all of a sudden you start looking at a few guys that are unproven, and it doesn't look quite as good," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "When at full strength, I feel a little bit more confident about what we'll be capable of doing."

Mike Thomas is the Jaguars' top receiver and the one they throw most often. He's had 21 targets in the first two games — by far a team high. He entered this season as the top receiver but wasn't considered one who could stretch the field.

For that role most expected Jason Hill, signed to a two-year deal in March."
