"The Jaguars added their third quarterback in eight days, claiming Trent Edwards off waivers on Tuesday.
Edwards was waived by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, just eight days after starting his second game of the season. He gives the Jaguars a solid option behind struggling starter David Garrard, who is coming off two of the worst games of his career.
Edwards is expected to practice today.
"It's a little bit like adding a draft pick," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said on a Sirius Satellite Radio show. "So we're excited to have him aboard."
The Jaguars cut linebacker Alvin Bowen to make room for Edwards. They plan to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster — Garrard, Edwards and Todd Bouman.
Edwards, 26, caught the eye of the Jaguars in a 2008 game against Jacksonville. In it, he led the Bills to a 20-16 win, completing 20-of-25 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars also studied Edwards when he came out of Stanford in 2007 and liked his character, size and skill set.
The Bills drafted Edwards in the third round in 2007. He made his debut on Sept. 23 of that year after an injury to then-starter J.P. Losman. Edwards started nine games as a rookie and was the first Bills rookie quarterback to record five wins since 1973. He set a franchise rookie record with 120 consecutive passes without an interception.
Edwards started in all 14 games he played in 2008. He threw 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and completed 65.5 percent of his passes, the sixth-best completion percentage in the NFL that season.
Last season he started in seven of eight games he played and threw six touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Edwards competed 18-of-34 passes in the Bills' season-opening loss to Miami this year. He had one touchdown and no interceptions. Edwards completed 11-of-18 passes for 102 yards and two interceptions in a Week 2 loss at Green Bay.
Edwards was demoted after Week 2, for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and then cut on Monday.
Because he wasn't a vested veteran, Edwards went on the waiver wire. Teams were able to claim him based on the reverse order of current standings. Ties were broken by strength of schedule. The Jaguars are one of nine NFL teams with a 1-2 record."
