It's not over for Chiefs, but it sure doesn't look good

"By NFL rules, it is impossible for the Chiefs to lose another game for at least five more days. So there's that.

Also, there are no reports of Tamba Hali coming down with polio, Jamaal Charles (at last check, anyway) is standing upright, and as of press time, the Chiefs have not yet given up a single yard against the Lions. By the grace of the NFL schedule, the Chiefs aren't allowed to stink up Arrowhead Stadium for two weeks.

The rest of the good news you'll have to make up on your own.

Maybe the Chiefs' season isn't actually over, but right now it sure feels like it is. And here's another bad sign, quoting directly from coach Todd Haley:

"Positives to me are, I saw throughout this game, even very late in the game, 11 guys going full speed on punt cover when it was pretty clear the game was over. I saw (that occurring in) all areas, where you saw everybody giving everything they had."

So, in other words, the Chiefs didn't give up in the first game of the season. Ignoring the fact that many smart and neutral observers actually did think the Chiefs gave up, it's an endlessly bad sign when the head coach's first positive sign is that his players didn't quit (though, to be fair, Haley also mentioned the Chiefs were fairly close to making a play or two).

Football lends itself to overreaction, especially in the emotion of the moment, so we become used to feeling a little better the day after disasters. And this is where the state of the Chiefs is especially discouraging."
