Mario Balotelli was applauded onto the training pitch by his Italy teammates on Tuesday after proposing to girlfriend Fanny Neguesha, writes John Cross in Rio De Janeiro.

But the Azzurri's boss Cesare Prandelli must decide if he is still in love with AC Milan striker Balotelli ahead of their World Cup opener against England on Saturday.

Not for the first time in his life, Balotelli is the centre of attention, with a growing feeling that Ciro Immobile should be parachuted into the striker’s role after his hat-trick in the Italians' final pre-tournament friendly.

Immobile would be following in a long tradition of strikers who have made a late run into Italy's World Cup team, including Salvatore ‘Toto’ Schillaci.
