The Dallas Cowboys probably need to start searching for Tony Romo’s heir apparent, and one way to do that is to draft a quarterback in April.

It’s highly unlikely that the Cowboys will select a QB in the first two rounds but the third round or later seems like a realistic possibility.

While participating in a Monday conference call, NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock named four quarterbacks who could be selected between the third and fourth rounds.

Perhaps the Cowboys will pull the trigger on one and allow that signal caller to study under Romo for the next few seasons.

The names Mayock mentioned were Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson, Tennessee’s Tyler Bray, Florida State’s E.J. Manuel and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones.

Mayock focused on the strong arms of Bray and Manuel but provided a much longer response when asked specifically about Jones.

“Like a lot of the quarterbacks this year, he’s so difficult to qualify,” Mayock said. “I can look at certain games and go that’s a first round draft pick. I can look at other games and go, he’s a fifth round guy.

“Like a lot of this year’s quarterbacks, there is no consistency with this kid,” Mayock said. “Same thing with Geno Smith. Same thing with Matt Barkley. There is a lack of consistency where you want to bang the table and say I love this kid. He’s smart, I think he cares. When protection breaks down and he’s got to get to his second and third read, and the mechanics start to break down, it’s not really good. And that is the case with a lot of these kids.

“When I look at Landry Jones, I’ve got him as my number five quarterback, and I’m holding my breath on that one a little bit. I think most of the league is looking at him as a third round guy. I think he’s a little better than that because I’ve seen him play at a higher level. But there is just nothing amongst this group of quarterbacks where you can bang the table and say I love this kid, and this is the quarterback of the future for my team.”

The Cowboys could also be in position to draft a No. 2 running back to compliment DeMarco Murray. This draft isn’t projected to be deep at running back but Mayock mentioned Texas A&M’s Christine Michael when asked for a player that could have the impact that Alfred Morris had for the Washington Redskins after being selected in the sixth round last year.
